Laser hair reduction being performed

In short

  • It reduces hair a great deal, but it is not permanent removal. Occasional touch-ups are normal.
  • A series of sessions is needed because hair grows in cycles.
  • Facial hair in women can be hormonal, which is checked before starting.

How does laser hair reduction work?

The pigment in the hair absorbs the laser light, which heats and weakens the follicle. Dark, coarse hair responds best. White, grey and very fine light hair do not respond well.

Is facial hair a sign of a hormone problem?

Hair on the chin, upper lip or jawline together with irregular periods or acne can point to PCOS. These signs are checked first, because laser works better and lasts longer when the hormonal cause is treated as well.

How should I prepare for a session?

  • Shave the area the day before. Do not wax, thread or pluck between sessions, as the laser needs the root in place.
  • Avoid sun tanning before sessions. Tanned skin is more likely to darken or blister.
  • Tell us about any medicines, as some make the skin sensitive to light.

How many sessions?

A course of sessions is spaced weeks apart to catch hair in its growth phase. Fewer and finer hairs grow back after each session. The number needed depends on the area, hair type and hormones, and you are told this before starting.

Are there side effects?

  • Redness and small bumps for a few hours after a session are common.
  • Darkening, lightening or blistering are uncommon, and less likely with correct settings and no tanning.

What does it cost?

Cost depends on how severe the problem is and which treatments suit you. After the consultation you are told the likely number of sessions and the cost before anything is booked.

Common questions

Is laser hair reduction painful?

Most people describe a warm snap on the skin. The laser has built-in cooling, and sensitive areas can be numbed first.

Is the result permanent?

The reduction is long-lasting, but some hair can return over time, especially with hormonal changes. Occasional maintenance sessions keep the result.

Can I have sessions in summer?

Yes, as long as the skin is not tanned. Sun protection on the treated area is important before and after each session.
